Gen. George Casey applauds Operation Homefront for supporting Military Families

Four-Star General George W. Casey, Chief of Staff of the Department of the Army and former head of operations in Iraq, flew to Fort Bragg and presented a Certificate of Appreciation for Patriotic Civilian Service to Jane Weaver-Sobel, President, Board Member Tom Costello, Staff Sarah Kanady, and volunteer Amy Wallace on behalf of Operation Homefront of North Carolina (OHNC). Awards also went to members of Fayetteville Cares, Ft. Bragg Family MWR and Pope Air Force Base AFRC.

Headquarters in Charlotte, NC, Operation Homefront of NC developed the idea for a baby shower for Army wives to show moral support to all those who are left behind while their spouses are away on deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. Of all the military operations in North Carolina, the event “Boots and Booties – The Largest Military Baby Shower Ever was taken to 1,000 Army wives at Fort Bragg where the largest contingent of troops are training and being deployed. Costing nearly $450,000, Operation Homefront put in over $200,000 and partnered with Fayetteville Cares and two military groups, Ft. Bragg Family MWR and Pope Air Force Base AFRC, to work together for a most successful event. Fayetteville Cares in particular recruited additional sponsors and gifts, as well as provided an ‘army’ of volunteers who executed the event with great success.

Free gifts were provided to the ladies including baby clothes from the K.I.D.S Foundation, Carter’s Clothes and Oshkosh; computers, ipods and cameras from CDW, and gifts from Costco and Borghese Cosmetics. In addition, the attendees, won a variety of gifts including car seats, gift baskets, strollers, ultrasound gift certificates, baby swings, baby furniture, books and tapes, restaurant gift certificates, cookbooks, pacifiers, baby blankets, phone cards, a washer-dryer, and one lucky mom-to-be won a car.

“This baby shower started out as our idea to benefit military families. When I took the idea to Joanne Chavonne of Fayetteville Cares, her eyes lit up and a partnership sparked between us, resulting into a fantastic event.” Said Jane-Weaver Sobel, ‘and without the unbelievable work of the volunteers of Fayetteville Cares who put their sole into this, it wouldn’t have worked. We are truly grateful for the partnership, and so very happy to all the young moms who had a great day.” As General Casey said at the presentation “We firmly believe the families are the strength of our soldiers, and our soldiers are the strength of our Army,” Jane adds, “Hopefully, thousands gained strength of spirit on that special day.”
