Selling Cars (part 2)

Sales Ratio: Starting out in the car business I knew it was a numbers game. selling cars is all about a ratio. The ratio gets better when you get better and based on the current market conditions. For example a new salesman with no experience usually would sell 1 to every 5 customers they encounter, equalling a 20% selling ratio. This was hard for me to understand starting out because I thought everyone that walked in the door bought a car, I had a lot to learn.

The ratio exists because of a few reasons:
1. Sale price of the car more than customer can afford
2. If the current vehicle to be traded in has an open loan on it greater than the Actual Cash Value (ACV)of the open loan. Negative Equity
3. Credit challenges
4. Customer can not produce Initial investment
5. Unrealistic expectations
6. Mis-communications
7. Lack of experience
8. Lack of Product Knowledge
9. Objections
10. etc; etc; etc;

The ratio can increased and reduced by any one or combination of any of these reasons. the ratio is not exclusively limited to any of the above reasons. As a new sales rep I knew I had to sharpen my skills in customer service, product knowledge, and the complete industry if I wanted to make this my new career and not just a job.

I had to understand that there are a few things I could not control. Have you ever heard the expression "my eyes are bigger than my stomach" or "champaign taste but beer budget", I had to learn the reason why the customer could not buy a car. We have all desied something more than we can afford. What young kid growing up in the 80's & 90's did not want a Ferrari after seeing Magnum P.I. or a Trans AM after seeing Smoking and the Bandit or Knight Rider? I know I am showing my age but we all aspire to something more in life.

I had to learn another thing that I could not control is a customer's "credit worthiness". Your credit is your meal ticket when it comes to large or major purchases like, land, boats, homes, and yes automobiles. Your credit worthiness not only determines the rate inwhich you can borrow against but for home many months you can borrow for. I had to learn that everyone deserves a a chance to purchase a car, but it is really all up to the banks. The relationship is between the customer and the lending institution, not the dealership. The dealership is like the match-maker for the lack of better words.

What I have learned was master all of the above to provide the best customer service.

Inside The Venza

The Venza's designers haven't just built a modern, attractive wagon and called it good. Instead, they've fitted the Venza with the very latest conveniences. Probably the most useful of these is a center console that slides and folds to reveal two large compartments. The one in front contains both a 12-volt outlet (one of two available to front passengers) and an auxiliary input for MP3 players.

There's a covered recess in the center stack that will hold an MP3 player, and it features a pass-through into the console to access the auxiliary port. There's also a small-items tray with a similar pass-through. This means you can connect your MP3 player and charge your cell phone without a mess of wires cluttering the console — a clever feature we'd like to see elsewhere.

The Venza's soft, cloth-upholstered seats never made our butts numb, while the backlit displays for the uncluttered instrumentation proved easy on the eyes. Both the audio system and dual-zone climate controls utilize a large knob/small knob arrangement where the knob closest to the driver controls the most important function — volume and driver temperature, respectively. The shift lever on the center stack is ugly but functional.

The rear seats recline for added passenger comfort and also fold flat to reveal 70.1 cubic feet of storage space — more than the Edge, CX-7 or Murano. Even when the rear seat is upright, there are 34.4 cubic feet of storage space behind the seats, again beating the crossovers.

Most of all, we found the 2009 Toyota Venza roomy and easy to use. Its doors open wide and its seat height makes ingress and egress as easy as any crossover. Six-foot adults fit comfortably in the rear seats — even when there are equally large passengers up front. We put a huge rear-facing baby seat behind a 6-footer and all was well, too.

Top 10 Hybrid Myths: # 10

MYTH # 10

10. Hybrid technology is only a fad.

Hybrid technology is often pitted against fuel cells, diesel engines, and/or hydrogen as the silver bullet approach to sustainable mobility. The greatest hope and investment has been placed in hydrogen fuel cells, which appear to be many decades away from commercialization. The failure of hydrogen-powered cars to materialize rapidly underscores the risk of focusing on a single solution.

The debate over the future of automotive technology has now turned toward finding the best ways to combine systems and fuels in a single hybrid vehicle. The experience of mass-producing hybrid gas-electric vehicles has given engineers the insight needed to develop complex systems needed to combine multiple sources of power.

In an Associated Press interview, Jim Press, former president of Toyota Motor Sales USA— and current vice chairman at Chrysler—summed it up this way: "I think everything will be a hybrid, eventually. It will either be a gas hybrid, a diesel hybrid, or a fuel-cell hybrid."

2009 Venza

Toyota builds its newest five-passenger crossover on the same line as the Camry, and the 2009 Toyota Venza is indeed the tall Camry wagon it appears to be. But to Toyota, the Venza is more than that. It's the product of almost seven years of deliberation and development work — an eternity in the car business. Nor is it a preordained, off-the-rack, three-row answer to family transportation like the Highlander and Sienna. In building the 2009 Toyota Venza, the Toyota planners have tried to read your thoughts years before you'd actually get around to thinking them. This package of everything is as long as a Camry (with the same 109.3-inch wheelbase) but as wide as a Toyota Highlander. All three vehicles ride on Toyota's K-platform architecture also used by the Avalon. The Venza has the same ride height as the Highlander, so it's 5.5 inches taller than a Camry, yet it's still 4.7 inches shorter than the Highlander. Still, the Venza (the name is a combination of venture and Monza) is a fairly conservative design. Nevertheless, Toyota argues with some justification that it's more of an image car than its shapeless platform mates. Initially, Toyota expected its new crossover to appeal mainly to women, but 55 percent of early hand-raisers are male.

Selling Cars

I have not been in the car business for a long time compared to many, but longer than some. There are a few things I have learned since I've started just three years ago. I decided to sell cars to take a break from from Corporate America, only to find out there are a lot of similarities.

I asked my peers what is selling cars all about . It was almost like asking what is the best flavor of bubble gum, everyone had a different answer. But it was a combination of what they all said...

  1. Knowing your product and how it appealed to customers,

  2. Knowing what your customer is looking for (Safety, Performance, Reliability, Durability),

  3. Understand how the customer was going to use the car, (mostly Highway or around town)

  4. Make sure the customer was not on too much car for their desired payment,

  5. How often does the customer buy a new car

  6. What do they like most about the car they are currently driving

  7. etc; etc; etc;

... and that was my first day at work, WOW. I guess what it all boiled down to was good customer service

Top 10 Hybrid Myths: # 9

9. Hybrids will solve all our transportation, energy, and environmental problems.

The hybrid car market is ramping up. In the past seven years hybrid sales in the US grew exponentially, from 9,500 in 2000 to 350,000 in 2007.

The numbers are encouraging but must be viewed in the context of the overall car market. The 350,000 hybrid car sales in 2007 represent only 2.5 percent of the 17 million new cars sold last year. If every new hybrid driver doubled fuel economy from 20 mpg to 40 mpg for 40 miles of daily driving—an optimistic estimate—then a gallon per hybrid car would be saved every day. That's a whopping 350,000 gallons per day saved by hybrid car drivers. But we've only reduced our daily US consumption from 400 million gallons to 399,650,000 gallons. Hybrid cars can only be viewed as a partial solution.

Part II: 2010 Prius

The new model arrives in U.S. showrooms this spring, equipped with 1.8-liter, four cylinder engine that pumps up performace. The car zips from zero to 60mph in 9.8 seconds in internal testing, compared to 10.9 seconds for it predecessor.

Fuel efficiency also improves, thanks to advances in design and technology. An aerodynamic stretched silhouette, along with underbody covers, minimizes air resistance, reducing the drag coefficient from 2.6 to.25. A new exhaust heat collection system uses engine coolant to extract exhaust heat, improving engine warm-up time and increasing start-up fuel economy.

A redesigned gas tank not only simplifies the fueling system but also sheds weight. In fact, the entire hybrid system weighs less.

Keep the prius in mind if you want something ECO and TECHNO

Top 10 Hybrid Myths: # 8

MYTH # 8

8. Hybrids pose a threat to first responders.

Now that hundreds more hybrid cars take to our roads each day, some critics have wondered if public safety agencies should be concerned about all those high-voltage battery packs zipping along at freeway speeds. Yes and no.

A first responder is often in a mad race to save the lives of accident victims. In that rush, the responder has to make dozens of rapid technical decisions about how to safely remove the passengers from the vehicle. Adding the complication of unfamiliar hybrid technology can slow things down. So, it's the worry about potential dangers—primarily when and where to cut power—rather than the system itself that can cause a problem.

Turns out that a good amount of training—and, in case of fire, lots of water—should be most of what a first responder needs upon arriving at an accident involving a hybrid. Firefighters have coped with advancing automotive technologies for years, and they will skillfully deal with hybrid cars.

Top 10 Hybrid Myths: # 7

MYTH # 7

7. Only liberals buy hybrids.

The long list of celebrity hybrid drivers includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, and Larry David. They zip around Hollywood in their Priuses and appear on talk shows extolling the virtues of hybrid vehicles. These celebrities, and other early adopters of hybrid technology, were primarily motivated by the environmental benefits. As a result, they created an easy target for naysayers to brand all hybrid drivers as tree-huggers.

In the ensuing years, Americans of all political stripes have become more aware of the economic and political costs of oil dependency. Conservative pundits claim that our petrodollars end up in the hands of repressive Middle East regimes and their patrons. As a result, we fund both sides of the war on terror. In addition, autoworkers have grown more interested in fuel-saving technologies, recognizing that they bear the brunt of Detroit's reluctance to abandon once-profitable SUVs.

2010 Prius

To go before. To go beyond. In its thrid generation,Prius builds on its eco-techno base to provide more power, more mpg, and more futuristic features.

Take, for example, the optional solar moonroof that help keeps drivers from losing their cool. While the car is parked, solar panels power a ventilation fan that reduces the temperature inside. As owners approach their car, they can tamp down the temp even more by flipping on the A/C with an available key fob.

Now, I know you are asking when this hot ride is going to avavilable??

Stay tuned to find out more

Top 10 Hybrid Myths - # 6

MYTH # 6

6. Hybrids are small and underpowered.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid boasts over 270 horsepower via the Hybrid Synergy Drive system. The Lexus GS 450h hybrid sedan exceeds 300 horsepower and will go from 0 to 60 mph in less than six seconds. And the Toyota Volta concept is a 408-horsepower scream machine.

These vehicles prove that adding an electric motor and batteries to the drivetrain does not intrinsically mean diminished performance. Combining a gasoline engine and electric motors gives engineers more control to emphasize fuel parsimony or speed, urban driving or highway cruising, large vehicles or small.

TOYOTA COROLLA

The Toyota Corolla has always been arguably the most conservatively styled vehicle from a brand known for, among other things, its conservative styling. For 2009, however, the designers in Japan have breathed a little life into the Corolla Toyota

Exterior styling varies somewhat across the lineup on the 2009 Toyota Corolla. ConsumerGuide notes that the "Corolla offers five trim levels for 2009 vs. three for 2008," and visual appeal ranges from virtually non-existent up to surprisingly sporty on the Corolla Toyota. Of the five trim levels on the 2009 Toyota Corolla, which Edmunds lists as "base, LE, S, XLE and XRS," the XRS is by far the most noticeable on the road. Autoblog calls the 2009 Corolla XRS "one of the handsomest pieces of sheetmetal in Toyota's U.S. lineup," featuring "speedy-looking bodywork." All versions of the 2009 Toyota Corolla include what Kelley Blue Book calls "a trio of character lines" running from front to back, as well as a "low front air intake" that helps add "visual width below the Toyota signature mesh grill." Motor Trend finds that the new Toyota Corolla is "a longer, lower, wider" car than the outgoing model, which helps improve the car's appearance.

Reviews read by TheCarConnection.com found the interior of the 2009 Toyota Corolla to be designed for functionality and ease of use above all else. Operation Homefront: Gen. George Casey applauds Operation Homefront for supporting Military Families

Gen. George Casey applauds Operation Homefront for supporting Military Families

Four-Star General George W. Casey, Chief of Staff of the Department of the Army and former head of operations in Iraq, flew to Fort Bragg and presented a Certificate of Appreciation for Patriotic Civilian Service to Jane Weaver-Sobel, President, Board Member Tom Costello, Staff Sarah Kanady, and volunteer Amy Wallace on behalf of Operation Homefront of North Carolina (OHNC). Awards also went to members of Fayetteville Cares, Ft. Bragg Family MWR and Pope Air Force Base AFRC.

Headquarters in Charlotte, NC, Operation Homefront of NC developed the idea for a baby shower for Army wives to show moral support to all those who are left behind while their spouses are away on deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. Of all the military operations in North Carolina, the event “Boots and Booties – The Largest Military Baby Shower Ever was taken to 1,000 Army wives at Fort Bragg where the largest contingent of troops are training and being deployed. Costing nearly $450,000, Operation Homefront put in over $200,000 and partnered with Fayetteville Cares and two military groups, Ft. Bragg Family MWR and Pope Air Force Base AFRC, to work together for a most successful event. Fayetteville Cares in particular recruited additional sponsors and gifts, as well as provided an ‘army’ of volunteers who executed the event with great success.

Free gifts were provided to the ladies including baby clothes from the K.I.D.S Foundation, Carter’s Clothes and Oshkosh; computers, ipods and cameras from CDW, and gifts from Costco and Borghese Cosmetics. In addition, the attendees, won a variety of gifts including car seats, gift baskets, strollers, ultrasound gift certificates, baby swings, baby furniture, books and tapes, restaurant gift certificates, cookbooks, pacifiers, baby blankets, phone cards, a washer-dryer, and one lucky mom-to-be won a car.

“This baby shower started out as our idea to benefit military families. When I took the idea to Joanne Chavonne of Fayetteville Cares, her eyes lit up and a partnership sparked between us, resulting into a fantastic event.” Said Jane-Weaver Sobel, ‘and without the unbelievable work of the volunteers of Fayetteville Cares who put their sole into this, it wouldn’t have worked. We are truly grateful for the partnership, and so very happy to all the young moms who had a great day.” As General Casey said at the presentation “We firmly believe the families are the strength of our soldiers, and our soldiers are the strength of our Army,” Jane adds, “Hopefully, thousands gained strength of spirit on that special day.”

**About Operation Homefront - Operation Homefront provides emergency assistance and morale to our troops, to the families they leave behind, and to wounded warriors when they return home. Toyota Car Maintenance Tips: Fuel Injectors

*Fuel Injection Service*

Today’s new fuel injection systems provide balanced power, lower emissions and improved drivability. However, they are very susceptible to clogging and sometimes becoming completely plugged.
Just as a garden hose nozzle can be set to spray a fine mist, your vehicle’s fuel injectors disperse gasoline in an even spray to all areas of the cylinders.
Problems arise when contaminants in automotive fuels becomes deposited into the tip of the injectors, thus creating an altered spray pattern and reducing fuel flow.

the common consensus for a fuel injection service is about every 12,000 miles to 15,000 miles.

So stop throwing your money away. Have the experts HERE at TOYOTA clean your fuel injection system today! It’s the fastest way to a smoother running engine and better gas mileage!

WHY YOU MAY WANT A YARIS

As a PROUD owner of a 2008 Yaris, I find it to be very fuel-efficient, a comfortable ride, and, might I add, a very handsome interior. Now, for you concerned parents out there, it does come with some great safety features. From anti-lock brakes, to depower airbags, and passenger airbrakes for the ones worry about their friends as well. Introduced in 2007, Yaris replaced the average, and oddly proportioned, echo as the least expensive offering in Toyota's showroom. For the budget-conscious shopper, it's a much better product all the way around - one that combines attractive styling and out standing fuel economy with competitive equipment levels, respectable performance, and general likability that was lacking in it's competition.

SO TODAY IS A GREAT DAY TO BECOME A PROUD OWNER OF A 2008 YAYA!!!!!

Toyota Car Maintenance Tips: WHAT IS HEPA AIR FILTER?

High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter-

When it comes to purified air filtration, don't you want a filtering process you can trust? A HEPA AIR FILTER has been tested and proven guaranteed to do an exceptional job of removing mold spores, dust mites, pollen and pet dander for allergy relief. HEPA filters can remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers in diameter. Particles of this size are the most difficult to filter and are thus considered the most penetrating particle size. Particles that are larger or smaller are filtered with even higher efficiency.

You should replace the HEPA filter in you’re vehicle every 15,000 MILES!

TOP 10 HYBRID MYTHS # 5

MYTH # 5

5. Hybrids are expensive.

Hybrids are currently available in 15 different models ranging in price from $22,000 to $103,000. The most efficient model —the Toyota Prius—are available well below $30,000. By the end of the decade, more than 50 models are expected. By that point, hybrids will represent the full range of sizes, shapes, and costs.

Rechargeable batteries, electric motors, and sophisticated computer controls do add to the cost of producing a hybrid car. However, as production numbers increase, economies of scale are expected to reduce those costs. Toyota plans to offer hybrid versions of all its most popular models and thus cut in half the incremental cost of hybrids.

TOP 10 HYBRID MYTHS - # 3 & 4

MYTH # 3 & 4

3. Hybrids are a new phenomenon.

In 1900, American car companies produced steam, electric, and gasoline cars in almost equal numbers. It wasn't long before enterprising engineers figured out that multiple sources of power could be combined. A young Ferdinand Porsche produced the first known hybrid gas-electric prototypes in 1900. In 1905 American engineer H. Piper filed the first patent for a gas-electric hybrid vehicle.

4. People buy hybrids only to save money on gas.

Hybrid cars top the list of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road. Going farther on a gallon of gas—and thus reducing a car owner's tab at the pump—is a logical advantage of a hybrid car. But car shoppers seldom buy based purely on a logical economic equation. Besides, as critics of hybrid technology frequently point out, those savings seldom add up to the extra cost of buying a hybrid over a comparable conventional vehicle.

So, if it's not to save money, why are more and more shoppers going hybrid? Many reasons: To minimize their impact on the environment, to help reduce the world's addiction to oil, and to earn technology bragging rights. Who was the first on your block to have a color TV? Who will be the first to drive a hybrid?

L.B. Floyd Golf Classic

I remember getting that phone call like it was yesterday. I was bagging groceries on January 20, 2000 in Raleigh, NC after getting 22" of snow in one day. It was my wife's best friend frantic on the other end of the phone, "Oh my goodness Earl you have to get here she is about to have the baby"! At first I thought it was a joke because my wife was in Greensboro, NC packing and she was only 6 months pregnant.

Sure enough she was not kidding. By this time the lines were stacked all the way down the aisles to the meat department. Customers were steadily piling into the store for supplies. There was only 11 employees able to make it work, and four managers including me, I knew I had no choice but to leave. It was the hardest decision I have ever had to make but my wife and my soon to be premature child needed me.

I loaded up in my 1996 SR5 4runner and began out on the dangerous roads. A trip that normally should have taken me an hour and a half, took me four and a half hours to get there. Driving 35mph the whole way there my mind began to race. What if there is complications, what if something happens to my wife. What if they have to take my baby will she be able to survive? How long will she need to be in the hospital? What if she is not fully developed and they can't save her, what if, what if, what if???

When I finally arrive to the hospital I was updated on my wife's condition. I was informed that they had to take the baby because she developed preeclampsia. I did not know what those fancy hospital terms meant, all I wanted to know is are they alright? I was brought to my wife's bedside were she was still knocked out from the medicine in surgery. I stayed with her for hours while the doctors worked on the baby. I was so scared, my first baby girl was born, I was not there and she is fighting for her life.

Finally, my wife came to and we spoke for awhile. The nurses came in and said it is time for you to see your baby girl. I was led to the NicQ and had to scrub down very thoroughly. I was informed that any kind of germs can really harm the newborns in this area. I expected it to be like on television. I would see her laying in a bassinet with a little teddy bear next to her, but nothing could prepare me for what I was about to see.

I could tell by the seriousness in the air this was not going to be like television. As I approached I saw this little tiny baby no bigger than a beanie baby with all these tubes in her. I could not stop crying to see my first born daughter in a plastic box with all of these monitors hooked-up to her. Only 2lb 4oz and she was fighting for her life. She was surrounded by so much technology and high-dollar equipment that allowed her to live.

I could not touch her because the doctors said it might harm her growth. How can you not touch a person that you love or embrace her? But without a doubt I knew she was getting the best care and attention she needed. Doctors warned me that there might be some complications early in her development and in the future. Fast forward 9 years (2009) and all we had to worry about is a little asthma. We were one of the lucky ones my wife says to me all the time, Danielle is our miracle child.

Once I started working at Rick Hendrick Toyota I found out that our big charity was with the Cape Fear Valley Hospital ~ Friends of Children Foundation. Wow, you talk about a perfect bonus for working here. I learned about my General Manager's story of his child and why we participate. In 2008 I got a chance to play in the Golf Tournament to raise money for this foundation. Now here we are, 2009 and the L.B. Floyd Golf Classic & Friends of Children Foundation needs your help to make this an even bigger contribution year.

There are so many children out there like my daughter that are born everyday that deserve a chance for life. This years proceeds will go to to purchase of a General Electric "Giraffe Incubator" for the nicQ. These unit are very expensive and we can't wait to provide the hospital with this gift of life.

To learn more about this life saving machine please visit Giraffe Incubator

TOP 10 HYBRID MYTHS (series)

MYTH # 2

Hybrid batteries need to be replaced.

Worries about an expensive replacement of a hybrid car's batteries continue to nag many potential buyers. Those worries are unfounded. By keeping the charge between 40 percent and 60 percent—never fully charged, yet never fully drained, carmakers have greatly extended the longevity of nickel metal hydride batteries.

The standard warranty on hybrid batteries and other components is between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, depending on the manufacturer and your location. But that doesn't mean the batteries will die at 100,000 miles. The U.S. Department of Energy stopped its tests of hybrid battery packs, when the capacity remained almost like new—after 160,000 miles. A taxi driver in Vancouver drove his Toyota Prius more than 200,000 miles in 25 months, and after that time and mileage the batteries remained strong.

TOP 10 HYBRID MYTHS (series)

Myth # 1:

You need to plug in a hybrid car.

As soon as the word "electricity" is spoken, you think of plugs, cords, and wall sockets. But today's hybrid cars don't need to be plugged in. Auto engineers have developed an ingenious system known as regenerative braking. (Actually, they borrowed the concept from locomotive technology.) Energy usually lost when a vehicle is slowing down or stopping is reclaimed and routed to the hybrid's rechargeable batteries. The gas engine is also used to transfer energy to the batteries. The process is automatic, so no special requirements are placed on the driver.

Ironically, while car companies used to spend time and money explaining that hybrids need not be plugged in, a growing number of the major automakers (as well as activists and politicians) are pushing for plug-in hybrids. The ability to plug a hybrid into the electric grid overnight to charge a larger set of batteries would mean that most city driving could be done without burning a single drop of gasoline.

For Myth # 2, visit us again tomorrow!
